What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stranger

Adventures in Authoring May 4, 2018

As I type this blog, I am sitting on my tour bus seat with my computer perched on my lap. (Don’t tell my chiropractor). During the seven months of tour, this seat has been my bed, my office, my sofa, my kitchen.

The thing is, if I didn’t have a writing career, if I were just being a full time actor and living a leisurely tour life, I would have so much time to read and play. But I have an author career to maintain. I wouldn’t want to change a thing. Smashing all my time into writing when I’m not eating and sleeping is a worth the sacrifice.

Generally, I wake up, crawl my way onto the bus, and sleep through quiet hours. Then it’s time for lunch, during which I work on managing my social media accounts. Afternoon on the bus is writing and editing time. Get to the hotel at 3:30-ish, work/swim if there’s a pool, scrounge for dinner. Get on the bus to go to the venue at 5:15-ish. Get to the theatre, cram writing work in between meetings, sound check, and the show. Get back to the hotel at 10:45-ish. Work until about 2am. Go to bed. Start the whole process over bright an early the next morning.

There are times where variations happen. If we’re in a city for more than a day, I can sneak away for a few hours if there’s a hiking trail available. If there’s a really great brewery, I’ll sacrifice a bit of my word count to sample the local brews. But really it’s a lot of time pushing through to get things done.

But it’s worth it because by the end of this tour I will have
Released two books:

Boy of Blood (Girl of Glass, #2)

The Girl Without Magic (The Chronicles of Maggie Trent, #1)

Today is the day! Today is the day!

Boy of Blood has been sent out into the world!

Boy of Blood Cover
After Nightland’s vicious attack on the domes, the safety and perfection of the world within the glass has been contaminated. Desperate to rebuild, outsiders are allowed into the domes to help, breaking the cardinal rule: outsiders and Domers must always be separated. But the city is in shambles, crumbling into chaos without the Vampers of Nightland to keep order, and one name is carried on the wind: Nola.

Clinging to Jeremy, Nola struggles to find a way to exist in the domes, turning her back on all she learned in the city. But when one of the outsiders brings the dark secrets of the domes to light, the line between survival and murder blurs against the spectre of the dying world.

Can Nola follow the dark path laid out by the domes? Will the dangers of the night become her new sanctuary?

Boy of Blood is book two in the Girl of Glass series, and I am thrilled to be continuing Nola’s journey. Boy of Blood may find Nola back in the domes, but the danger is closer, the darkness more bloody, and the romance heating up.

To celebrate the release, I’m hosting an amazing Rafflecopter with a grand prize of a Kindle Fire 7 pre-loaded with some great Dystopian reads. (more…)

A Taste Test February 23, 2018

It’s taste testing time.

No, sadly I don’t have virtual cookies to share, because that would be awesome. I’ve books.

I took the plunge and set up an Instafreebie account! Now you can download samples from The Girl Without Magic, Girl of Glass, and How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin’ Days!

It’s like a free sample of bourbon chicken at the mall. Come on, try a little. You know you’ll like it.

But in all seriousness, I’m really excited to try a new platform for reaching out to readers. Sometimes being an author is like screaming into the void, and any chance you have at connecting to other readers and even fellow authors is so amazing. It makes you feel less like a crazy person glued to your laptop and more like a human being telling stories as a way of contributing to society.

So please check out the links, grab your taste test, and if you have a moment, share with your friends.

After all, who doesn’t like free?

The Privilege of Compassion December 6, 2016

My new YA mid-apocalyptic sci-fi Girl of Glass is now available in eBook and paperback!

If you’re a person who reads, you’ve probably read a dystopian novel. From Hunger Games to Divergent, Lord of the Flies to Maze Runner we’ve seen plagues, corrupt governments, and all sorts of suffering as the world crumbles. But we always seem to look up from the bottom.

The stories of the end of our world are told from the point of view of the bottom. Those who suffer, starve, and bleed. Who fight for every scrap of food and wonder each night if they’ll live to see morning. The ones who the tumbling governments have chosen to abuse or experiment on.

But what would the end of order look like from the top? If you were one of the chosen one percent who were meant to survive, how would you view the decaying world?

Would you be like the rich in the Capital of Panem, seeing the poor as little more than animals that can be killed for entertainment? Would you be a doctor and create a terrible maze to study the ill?

Magnolia Kent can’t stand to see either of those terrible things happen.

girl-of-glass-coverTwo worlds…one glass wall…no turning back.

The human race has been divided. The chosen few live in the safety of the domes, watching through their glass walls as those left on the outside suffer and die. But desperation has brought invention, and new drugs have given the outsiders the strength to roam the poisoned night unafraid – but it comes at a price.

Seventeen-year-old Nola Kent has spent her life in the domes, being trained to protect her little piece of the world that has been chosen to survive. The mission of the domes is to preserve the human race, not to help the sick and starving. But when outsider Kieran Wynne begs for Nola’s help in saving an innocent life, she is drawn into a world of darkness and danger. The suffering on the other side of the glass is beyond anything Nola had imagined, and turning her back on the outside world to return to the safety of the domes may be more than she can stand. Even when her home is threatened by the very people Nola wants to help.

Now Available:         Amazon         Barnes & Noble         iBooks         Kobo

Looking at a dystopian world from the point of view of privileged compassion is what began the story of Girl of Glass. What are the moral implications of the survivors? How much pain can you ignore and still call yourself human? But compassion is costly, and when the world is being driven into darkness, touching the shadows comes at a terrible price. Those are the choices Nola Kent has to make.

What would you choose? How much suffering would you be able to watch if you knew you could stay safely away from it? Could you lose the compassion that defines us as humans in order to preserve the human race?

Harry Potter and the Stolen Mountain July 2, 2016

J.K. Rowling has finally released the location of the North American School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Ilvermorny is located on the peak of Mount Greylock. My inner Harry Potter geek is so thrilled to finally know where the American wizards of Rowling’s world study and learn. But the author me is having a minor meltdown.

See, way back at the beginning of The Tethering Series, I knew I wanted to use a real mountain for the lair of the Pendragon, the chief evil dude in the series. After a ton of research, I chose Mount Greylock, spelling it Graylock to match the name of the clan that rules that territory. I even climbed the mountain to make sure the mountain would work well!

img_5781

After all that research, three years later J.K. Rowling added her wizarding school to the mountain. The Pendragon has new neighbors, and I’ll bet there’s a quidditch pitch.

On the one hand it’s cool that my research and Rowling’s research led us to the same mountain. Great minds think alike and all. On the other hand I’m terrified for what it might mean for the mountain. It’s not exactly a well-known or expertly trailed park. There is a monument right on top, exactly where Ilvermorny is supposed to stand, but other than that there’s not much. I don’t know if the park can handle an influx of eleven-year-olds on September 1st. People are going to get lost in the woods, and parking and peeing will be a nightmare.

On the third awkward hand that nobody likes to talk about, The Tethering Series is now doomed to be called fan fiction. Despite the copyright date inside the book, people will assume that Rowling’s magic moved to Mount Greylock first, and Amazon reviews will start coming calling The Tethering fan fiction. Being the good little author that I am, I won’t be able to respond to tell them to check the copyright date and see that the battle at Graylock with the Pendragon came before Ilvermorny was even a word.

My mom said to just think of it as J.K. Rowling writing fan fiction of my books. She liked The Tethering so much and found the scenes on Mount Graylock so inspiring she had to create a whole wizarding school based on my mountain.

I know that she probably just did the same geographical research that I did, minus the actual climbing of the mountain, and decided it was an amazing spot for magic. But as I am in the midst of a panic attack, that’s what I’ll tell myself. J.K. Rowling just created fan fiction of The Tethering Series.

The Tethering is Here! October 20, 2014

The day has arrived! The Tethering is now available on the Barnes and Noble website, Amazon, and Smashwords! Strangers can buy my book! After years of writing, revisions, and edits, Jacob Evans has been sent out into the world! It feels kind of like sending my characters to kindergarten. Shoving them out into the cold, cruel internet ether and hoping that I have prepared them well enough to survive on their own.

All sixteen-year-old Jacob Evans wants is to win the heart of Emilia Gray, but with order in the magical world crumbling, war threatening, and Emilia’s boyfriend living across the hall, he may never have the chance.

Jacob Evans loses everything he has ever known and is tossed into a world of magic. The Dragons, a group of rebel wizards, are threatening to expose the existence of magic to humans. Jacob is determined to find a way to fit into Emilia’s family, but as his powers grow, so does the danger. With the death toll mounting, Jacob is accused of acts of rebel terrorism and must fight to stay in a world he’s only just beginning to discover.

When Emilia’s life is threatened, Jacob must risk everything to save her. Does he have the power to rescue her in time? And what could their survival cost?

The paperback will be coming out before Christmas, but for today The Tethering can be placed on e-devices all over the world. My story will be in places I’ve never even heard of being read by people I’ve never met. It’s nerve wracking, thrilling, and completely incomprehensible.

Please Tweet, Facebook, and share The Tethering! Help the book to travel like digital fire!

And thank you all from the bottom of my heart for coming with me on this crazy ride!
