In traveling for the Wizard of Oz tour, we get to go to some really great places and some places that…aren’t on the radar for must-visit destinations.

Recently, we visited Detroit. The only things I knew about Detroit were that cars got made there and that the economic slumps hit it very hard. While both those things are true, nobody ever mentioned how awesome Detroit is!

The husband and I wandered out of our hotel, just looking to stretch our legs, and we found a huge amount of outdoor art that led us to a Christmas wonderland!

They had blow-up igloos with table tennis and hot chocolate, a tent decked out to be a ski lodge, and an ice skating under a giant Christmas tree!

So what did these wise actors do on their precious day off? We went ice skating! (more…)

That Time They Trusted Me with Fire August 13, 2016

I’m a little accident prone. Okay, I’m significantly accident prone, especially when it comes to fire. Kitchen fires, camp fires, I can destroy things like a pro. And for the last few weeks I’ve been playing the Wicked Witch of the West, complete with real live fire shooting out of my hands.

It’s a little, flash paper device, but it does make a nice little flame.

Sometimes the thing won’t go off at all; occasionally a ball of fire forms around my hand; and one time I caught a tiny bit of the set on fire. Just the little strings hanging off the twine decorations, but still, set on fire all because of me! Woot woot (and hope I don’t get fired)!

And not only am I supposed to shoot fire out of my hand; I’m supposed to aim for people! Mostly my lovely roomie who plays the Scarecrow. Which is terrifying. Looking at a person, pressing a button, and hoping that fire shoots at them. (more…)

Botching the Biking July 23, 2016

I’m not the best at riding a bike. I mean, I can do it. On a level, concrete surface that doesn’t twist or turn too much. And doesn’t have too many people around. And if my backpack has even weight distribution.

Basically, I suck.

I didn’t learn to ride a bike as young as most kids do. Between my mom working crazy hours and my dad’s super bad knees, there just wasn’t anyone who could spend hours in a parking lot trying to get me to peddle. There was a guy who lived down the road who was willing to teach me.

He had been in a bad accident and didn’t have much use of one side of his body, but he could ride a bike like a fiend. I figured if he could ride with one good leg, surely I could do it with two! He had me meet him in the fire department parking lot and told me to wear overalls. I didn’t really know why, but I was so desperate to learn I figured it was best not to ask questions. (more…)

When I was growing up my mother always had a Girl Scout troop. The number of Girl Scouts that have changed my diaper is slightly embarrassing. My Mom was always planning the next adventure for them. They went to England (which is why my first birthday was on a plane), they went camping everywhere you’re allowed to pitch a tent, and she took them to as much theatre as possible.

When I was three she decided to take them to see Arsenic and Old Lace. At the last minute one of the girls got sick, and since my mother refused to waste a ticket, she decided to take me in her place. (more…)
