What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stranger

The Peace in the Crime Program January 18, 2019

When troubled times find me, I have a very simple solution: watch a crime drama.

I’m completely serious. No matter how awful your day might seem, chances are you’re way better off than victim number two on Law and Order: SVU.

Picture this: you’ve had a long day at work, the grocery store you hit on the way home is flooded with jerks, you get an email as you walk through the door telling you to do more work that shouldn’t have anything to do with you, you try to settle in for the night and realize the washing machine is broken and making all your clothes worse off than when you put them in to be cleaned.

Instead of sitting down with a glass and thinking that the world is pooping on your head, pour that same glass of wine, turn on Criminal Minds, and watch the Behavioral Analysis Unit track serial killers. Even though you’ve had a bad day, if your day has not involved entrails, murder, or the FBI, you’re doing pretty darn well.

So, next time you feel like curling up and crying because it seems like the world is intent on yanking your pigtails, try watching some high quality programing about people who are way worse off than you.

The perspective shift can be a real life saver.

I learned a thing about myself the other day.

I’m afraid of truck trailers.

I discovered this while backstage at a show. We were in a tiny venue where the semis the set travels on were pulled up to one of the quick change stations. There wasn’t a door between us and the trucks. The trailer doors were wide open and pointed right at us as we changed.

These gaping metal voids made the hairs on the back of my neck prickle, and at first I thought maybe it was just because there were shadows in the trailers that looked a little spooky. And then I realized modern media has taught me to be terrified of empty semis!

There are really only three purposes to semis:

1) You’re an evil dude ferrying illegal immigrants across the border. You’re inevitably going to leave the poor immigrants locked in the back too long, and the police are going to arrive just in time to save the smallest child while the other sixty people you have trapped like caged chickens die. I think I may be watching too much Criminal Minds.

For those who aren’t familiar with Criminal Minds, it’s about a group of FBI agents who hunt serial killers. So each episode is about the worst of the worst humanity can provide.

Why am I binge watching a show where you know people are going to die and not from zombies or beheadings? The husband and I have been doing a ton of unpacking and cleaning, and it’s a great show to have on in the background. Honestly, whoever makes their sound track is a genius. The music always tells you when it’s really important that you look at the screen. The music swells…and then there’s a severed head. Super easy to just sort-of pay attention to. And I love watching crime shows because no matter how stressed and downtrodden I feel, I am still way better off than that girl on the slab who had all her blood removed.

But here’s where I think I’ve been watching too much and think I might need to switch to Care Bears. (more…)
