I have a fear of hunger. I know what you’re probably thinking: You’re a middle class American. Why would you ever worry about being hungry? And you have a very good point. There are people in this world and even in this country who have to worry about true starvation. I’m just worried about being hungry. I worry about being someplace looking at lovely warm food and knowing that I won’t be able to eat any of it.

I have food allergies. Not preferences, or fads. Real, true, gonna-wind-up-swollen food allergies. (more…)

When I was almost sixteen, my mother sent me to a weeklong church sailing camp. It was a really great concept. We hiked our boat a mile down a trail and then sailed to the far side of a lake where we were supposed to commune with nature, learn about the Bible, and sail. There were lots of problems with this equation, but my biggest problem was the lack of food. Or at least food I could eat without going into anaphylactic shock. (more…)

One summer when I was home from college, my sister had her wisdom teeth removed. My mother drove her to the procedure, but after she brought my sister home she had to go to work for the afternoon. So, it was my job to sit with my puffy-faced, miserable sister. (more…)
