A new Review of The Tethering!

Living the Dream

Welcome to another booksSunday book review. Although it’s Palm Sunday and 9 days into spring, It’s  -8 C outside which feels like -14 C with the wind–that’s  7 F for my American friends. You know, its sounds so much colder in Celsius! This morning, I’d like to talk about a great new series that captured my interest when I read it last year.

As a high school teacher, I taught several YA novels–books like The Giver, Holes, The Chrysalids, Island of the Blue Dolphin, Lord of the Flies,Z for Zachariah, A Separate Peace, The Pigman–all chosen for study because they had teenage heroes and heroines, but most of those books didn’t have happy endings. In fact, if you’ve read them, you know that many are set in a world where I’d rather not live. While The Pigmanis humorous at times…

Athena’s Daughters 2 – Guest Post from Tess Tabak December 19, 2014

A great update on Athena’s Daughters 2!

As part of the Athena’s Daughters 2 Kickstarter campaign, the authors and editors are doing a blog tour. Today I am delighted to be hosting Tess Tabak here at acubedsf.

Tess Tabak is a writer, filmmaker, and co-editor of The Furious Gazelle. She is a recent graduate of Purchase College, where she won the Ginny Wray award for fiction. She lives in Brooklyn, New York. Her most recent film, BEANED, recently premiered at the Williamsburg International Film Festival in Brooklyn.

Here she is to talk about writing science fiction and fantasy:

How is your story SF/Fantasy?

My story in Athena’s Daughter’s II, “The Miraculous,” has elements of fantasy because it is set during the zombie apocalypse.

Why did you write this story/do you write in general in this genre?

A lot of what I write is non-fiction, or satirical. If it suits the piece I’m writing, I’ll incorporate science-fictional…

We Made It! September 13, 2014

Filed under: Uncategorized — meganorussell @ 10:00 am

Left our housing in Denali at 8:30AM Thursday, September 11th Alaska time. Got to our hotel in Pennsylvania at 3:00AM Today EST. Sorry there won’t be a post today. Can’t feel my face… My mouth tastes like teddy bear. And there’s no hotel room for us tomorrow night. Monday’s post might be about a night spent in a ditch in Amish country.

Merry Christmas! August 25, 2014

Merry Christmas! And no, I haven’t lost my mind. I’m in Denali National Park, and today we are celebrating Christmas!

For those of you who aren’t national park junkies, Christmas is celebrated in parks across the country on August 25th.

You see, many years ago there was a terrible snowstorm in Yellowstone National Park. Visitors were stranded in the lodges and to pass the time, they gathered around the fire and told stories and sang songs. It felt so much like Christmas Eve that they all decided to celebrate Christmas the next morning on August 25th.

In my mind, I picture the guests raiding the kitchen to steal tinfoil to make ornaments, but I’m not sure how realistic that is, considering  either they were in a small lodge and probably didn’t have tinfoil or they were in a big commercial lodge and health regulations wouldn’t allow guests to set foot in the kitchen.

But tinfoil aside, that snowstorm created a beautiful tradition that continues to this day. It’s a time to celebrate the love and magic of the holidays with our park family. So, on this Christmas Day, take a moment to appreciate whatever natural beauty you can find. Even if it’s only a tree growing on a city sidewalk. Today, we celebrate life in nature. Merry Christmas!

A Uke Addiction February 3, 2014

I have an unhealthy obsession with my ukulele. Not that I’m really good at it. I’m just obsessed with him. Yes, it is a him, and his name is Lil’ Chip, because he has a tiny chip on his back corner. But please don’t blame him for that flaw. It’s what makes him beautiful. (more…)
