What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stranger

And Christmas Begins November 16, 2018

It’s Christmas!

At least it is for me. I’ve spent the last week in rehearsals for Elf the Musical, and we’ll be opening the show on Thanksgiving. I’m used to elongated Christmas seasons. Growing up, Christmas season at my mother’s inn started on November 1st. The house was decorated for tea programs, and then we just ran along in a blur of Christmas until December 25th.

There’s some good and bad to starting Christmas so early. You get to be surrounded by festivities, but you want to strangle the next person who sings Deck the Halls. You don’t have to worry about the season slipping by without notice, but you’re too busy working to visit all the cool holiday displays.

This year is stranger than most for me. Last year, since I was living on a tour bus, I didn’t get to devote as much time to Christmas as I’m used to. So I want to go all out Christmas Cheer this year. But I’m in Florida. It’s hot. There will be no snow. And everyone with common sense knows you should not wrap palm trees in Christmas lights. But I’m still determined. I may be doing twelve shows a week and have writing deadlines to meet, but I’m going to have a merry, sunbaked Christmas dammit.

I will hang twinkle lights from every surface. I will watch Christmas movies no matter how early my rehearsal is the next morning. I will make Christmas cookies, put up five Christmas trees, and spread holiday cheer even if it gives me a nervous breakdown.

And when I have two shows on Christmas Day, I will walk into the theatre in flip flops and a Christmas dress, because that’s who I am as a person. Sunshine and schedules will not stop me.

Merry Christmas to all. And to all a Happy (almost) Thanksgiving.
