What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stranger

Not Quite Katniss November 20, 2013

As we all head to the theatres to see the latest installment of the struggles of Katniss Everdeen this week, I can’t help but wonder how many little girls all over the country are strapping on their bows and arrows, desperate to be more like the Girl on Fire. I have no need to learn to shoot to be more like Katniss. Though I have never been hunting, and the only wild animal I have ever killed was the accidental death of a humming bird, which I deeply regret, I do know how to use a bow and arrow.

My grandfather had bows and passed them down to my mother, who taught me how to shoot. I don’t do it very often, but on the occasional visits to my mom’s, we lock the cats in the house, put white towels on the lawn, and stand on the porch. I am then Legolas shooting at the invading Orcs. I know, I am a nerd’s dream, and my husband loves me for it. I’m not very good, but should the Zombie Apocalypse come, I have a basic knowledge. I would want my mother around in my zombie survival gang for her shooting and other life saving skills.

My mother was recently certified in archery (because she is my mother, we will consider this normal behavior), so she now has the ability to teach little girls to shoot like Katniss, even if she did squirm and shriek when I finally made her watch the first movie. Brave was an archery movie that was much more her speed.

Though I do not envy Katniss her death defying trials, I do think that a girl who can shoot a bow and arrow should be considered a heroine. And as for being a Girl on Fire, Katniss has nothing on me.

  1. I have a list of times I almost got fired.

  2. Megans Mom Says:

A dsiclaimer- No white towels were killed or injured in the archery practiced described (well, maybe injured, but none of the towels actually complained about being mythical monster targets).
