I’ve spent most of my adult life living in cast housing, which is basically a frat house for actors. When you spend your time eating, sleeping, and working with the same group of people, you get to know each other very well. Sometimes too well…

Once upon a time, I had a roommate who was afraid to lose her virginity. And not for any religious or moral reasons. The female ensemble was sitting around one day talking through her first time fear. After a while we finally found the real problem: she was scared it would hurt.

So I asked her, “Have you every stubbed your toe?”

She nodded.

“So, you know how it hurts really bad for a second, and you hop around on one foot, but then after a second you’re like ‘oh that’s not so bad, I might be able to walk again’?”

She nodded again.

“Well… it’s like stubbing your vagina.”

You’re welcome. I really am a great friend.

I really hope I can remember this, just in case I ever encounter someone with the same worry. Obviously, I can’t know how that feels, but I imagine you’ve described it perfectly.

  2. Also–you might walk around a little weird for a day or two.
